The #1 Instant Bestseller!
"One woman's courageous journey to make sense of that moment so many of us experience when, after mothering is largely complete, it dawns that the gargantuan task has left a gaping hole behind. Determined to reclaim fundamental pieces of herself, the author FACES DOWN HER GREATEST FEARS, soldiers through UNIMAGINABLE HEARTBREAK, and RESURFACES A STRONGER, MORE ESSENTIAL HUMAN. Her grit and grace are palpable."
- Katherine A. Sherbrooke, the NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR of Leaving Coy's Hill and Fill the Sky
A true story of female friendship, adventure, heartbreak and finding purpose beyond motherhood.
One morning Laura DeSisto woke up and realized her kids were gone and they weren't coming back.
Worse still, the ungrateful bastards had taken her sense of purpose and identity with them.
Her empty nest felt like a bottomless pit. It had swallowed her whole.
An impromptu scuba diving trip to the Bahamas was the catalyst for enormous change and growth in her life. With biting humor and vivid detail, she RECALLS HAIR-RAISING ENCOUNTERS WITH MAN EATING SHARKS, the DEATH OF A FRIEND WHO HAD BECOME MORE LIKE A SISTER, and the aftermath of THE MOST POWERFUL HURRICANE IN BAHAMIAN HISTORY. Through fast-paced storytelling and sharply drawn characters, the author has woven her experiences into a narrative that reads more like fiction.
Hilarious and heartbreaking, this story will stay with you long after the final page.

The three of us “girls” are now in full sprint down the long hall of terminal D in the Miami Airport - like middle-aged Charlie’s Angels. Except instead of chasing bad guys down an alley, we are trying to make this stupid tight connection. With each stride, my purse flaps violently up and down - barely missing my face on each upswing. I catch it mid-air and wrangle it towards me so I can check for the sixth time to see if my boarding pass for the next flight is still there.
“I see D37!” says Buffy. “We’re almost there.”
“Thank Christ!” says Tracie. “What a fucking huge terminal.” The three of us are so comfortable with each other that all niceties fly out the window in stressful situations. Our friendship is like the fat pants you change into at the end of a long day. We arrive at the gate, breathless, stray hairs cemented to our wet foreheads. The agent scans our passports and points to the door behind her. We rush through it and continue until we see a sign for Freeport, Bahamas.
From my window seat, I crane my neck to take frequent looks at the water. When we jet away from Florida it is a deep navy. The closer we get to the Bahamas, the lighter it gets, until coral heads and other large objects - fish perhaps? - are actually visible beneath the surface.
A sudden wave of nausea courses through my gut. And just like that, it dawns on me... I AM SCARED SHITLESS.
