Growth and Challenges

As the 1970s unfolded, the AA endured financial hardships, reflecting the general decline of the railroad industry. However, the AA managed to find its footing through strategic acquisitions and reorganizations. It was during this time that the Detroit Toledo & Ironton (DT&I) Railroad gained control of the AA in hopes of strengthening its presence in the region.

The AA faced its fair share of challenges during this period, including labor disputes, increased competition from trucking companies, and the ever-evolving regulatory landscape. However, the railroad's dedicated employees and innovative management found ways to overcome these hurdles and keep the wheels moving.

Expanding the Fleet

In the late 1970s, the AA took steps to modernize its fleet of locomotives and rolling stock. This included the acquisition of newer locomotives, such as the EMD GP38-2, which provided increased power and improved efficiency. Over time, the new locomotives replaced the older, steam-era engines, marking a milestone in the AA's evolution.

Additionally, the AA invested in upgrading its freight cars to accommodate changing demands and improve efficiency. These advancements not only enhanced the reliability and performance of the railroad but also positioned it for future growth.

The Railfan Chronicles is a series of books about different railroads during the period from 1975 to 2000. This was a period of great change in the railroad industry, with mergers of large railroads and creation of regional and short line railroads to operate unwanted lines of the Class One railroads.

Ann Arbor Railroad is the subject of this next book in The Railfan Chronicles. This is Volume 1 of our coverage of this unique Michigan railroad, looking at its operations from Toledo, Ohio across Michigan from 1975 to 1981. The Annie had an interesting mix of operations, including railroad carferries sailing across Lake Michigan and motive power which included three models of Alco locomotives. During this period it went from being a stand-alone railroad to one owned by the State of Michigan and operated by different contractors. All the changes occurring with the Annie during this time are seen in color and black and white photographs taken by the author.
