The archaeological site of Butrint showcases the remains of a fortified acropolis, a Roman theater, early Christian baptisteries, Venetian defense structures, and much more. These structures provide invaluable insights into the daily lives, architectural advancements, and cultural development of the people who called Butrint their home.

A Glimpse into Butrint's Past

The earliest evidence of human activity in Butrint dates back to the Bronze Age, around 1,000 BCE. Traces of Mycenaean pottery and Bronze Age tools have been discovered, suggesting the presence of a thriving community during this period.

The Greeks arrived in Butrint in the 8th century BCE, establishing a prosperous city-state. They constructed impressive structures, including a theater, temple, and agora. The influence of Greek culture can still be seen in the architectural styles and artifacts discovered in Butrint.

During the Roman period, Butrint witnessed further development and expansion. Many Roman emperors contributed to the growth of the city, constructing important buildings such as the Basilica and the Great Bath Complex. The architectural grandeur of the Roman era can still be admired today.

As the Roman Empire declined, Butrint underwent various transformations, including Byzantine and Venetian occupations. Byzantine churches, fortifications, and mosaics bear witness to this period of religious and political change.

The Venetians played a significant role in Butrint's history during the Middle Ages. They constructed defensive walls and towers that still stand today, reminding visitors of the town's strategic importance.

Exciting Discoveries and Ongoing Research

In recent years, archaeological excavations in Butrint have unearthed remarkable artifacts and structures. These discoveries shed new light on the daily lives of the town's inhabitants and the cultural exchanges that occurred over centuries.

One of the most significant finds is the Lion Gate, a massive stone entrance dating back to the 4th century BCE. The Lion Gate is adorned with intricate relief carvings and serves as a testament to Butrint's strategic and artistic significance.

Several early Christian baptisteries have also been uncovered, showcasing the religious transformation that took place in Butrint during the Byzantine era. These structures offer a glimpse into the spiritual beliefs and practices of the people during this time.

Excavations in Butrint continue to this day, with new discoveries regularly contributing to our understanding of the town's history. The ongoing research aims to piece together the puzzle of Butrint's past and preserve its heritage for future generations.

This richly illustrated volume discusses the histories of the port city of Butrint, and its intimate connection to the wider conditions of the Adriatic. In so doing it is a reading, and re-reading, of the site that adds significantly to the study of Mediterranean urban history over the longue durée . Firstly, the book proposes a new paradigm for the development-history of Butrint - based on discussions of the latest archaeological, historical and landscape studies from approximately 20 new excavations and surveys, together covering a temporal arch from prehistory to the early modern period. Secondly, it examines how the perception of the city influenced the archaeological methodology of 20th-century studies of the site, where iteration and reversal were often being applied in equal measure. In this it asks important questions on the management of heritage sites and the contemporary role of archaeological practise. Inge Lyse Hansen is Adjunct Professor of Art History at John Cabot University and specialises in the visual and material culture of the Roman world. She has published on portraiture, funerary art and the use of role models and patronage and has edited several archaeological volumes. Richard Hodges is Scientific Director of the Butrint Foundation, a leading medieval archaeologist and the author of more than 20 books. Sarah Leppard has led or participated in more than 15 excavations in eight countries and has managed major excavations at Butrint.
