From Maple Leaves to Commando Greens

For countless Canadian soldiers, the decision to join the Royal Marine Commandos stems from a desire to challenge themselves beyond what is traditionally available within their own military ranks. The opportunity to undergo training that pushes them to their limits and learn from some of the world's most experienced soldiers makes this transition all the more enticing.

Training alongside Royal Marine recruits from the United Kingdom, these Canadian soldiers become part of a tight-knit brotherhood. Together, they endure grueling physical and mental exercises that test their mettle, forge unbreakable bonds, and prepare them for the unimaginable situations they may face in combat.

The Crucible of Training

The training program for Royal Marine Commandos is renowned for its intensity and comprehensiveness. Escaping the comfort of home, these Canadians go through a baptism of fire that includes survival skills, amphibious warfare training, cold-weather operations, long-range reconnaissance patrols, and more. Their commitment to mastering these skills shapes them into versatile warriors capable of overcoming any obstacle, regardless of the environment.

Perhaps one of the most crucial aspects of their training is the emphasis on teamwork and cohesion. The ability to trust their fellow comrades, rely on their support, and work as a unified force is ingrained into their instincts. This is exemplified in the arduous final exercise known as the "Commando Course," where candidates must complete a series of grueling challenges as a team.

Deployed with Honor

After completing training, these Canadian soldiers join their fellow Royal Marine Commandos in various deployments across the globe. Their dedication to serving their country and preserving peace is put to the ultimate test as they face adversity in conflict zones and crisis situations.

From the intense combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan to protecting vital shipping lanes, Canadian Royal Marine Commandos have proven themselves to be an indispensable asset. Their versatility, adaptability, and unyielding determination enable them to excel in even the most unpredictable and hostile environments.

Legacy and Inspiration

The stories of these remarkable individuals resonate far beyond their military service. They inspire future generations of Canadians to rise above challenges, pursue their dreams, and make a lasting impact in all walks of life. Their narrative embodies the values of bravery, resilience, and sacrifice, serving as a constant reminder of the immense contributions made by those in uniform.

As we honor and celebrate the achievements of Canadian soldiers within the Royal Marine Commandos, let us remember the significance of their service to our country and the world. Their unwavering commitment to protecting the freedoms we hold dear serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for all.

With the authenticity of Jarhead and Bravo Two Zero and the straight-up narrative of Contact Charlie, this military memoir describes what really goes on in the training of an elite soldier and his tours in Afghanistan.

In 2004, Jake Olafsen signed up for the Royal Marines Commandos. He left everything behind at home in Canada on the basis of a spur-of-the-moment decision. The Royal Marines have the toughest and longest basic training of any infantry unit in the world. For Olafson, this meant eight months of wet and cold in England and Wales. It was hell, but he came out with the four Commando qualities that the corps look for: courage, determination, unselfishness, cheerfulness in the face of adversity.

Olafsen went on to serve for four years as a Commando in the Royal Marines, an elite military unit based in the United Kingdom. He went to Afghanistan twice: in 2006, he went to confront the Taliban in Helmand Province for six months, and in 2007, he was sent to do it all over again. His story is filled with good experiences, like the sense of accomplishment, patriotism, and camaraderie, and the opportunity to travel the world. But all good things come at a price. The sacrifices he made for the Corps are significant; he has killed the enemy and he has buried his friends. And in telling his story, Olafsen hopes that he can make sense of it all. This is an honest, gutsy story about the mud and the blood, the triumphs and the tragedies.
