This level of detail ensures that every visit is not just educational, but a truly immersive experience that transforms our understanding of history.

Preservation Through Technology

At The First National Museum, technology becomes a powerful ally in our quest to preserve the past for future generations. Instead, state-of-the-art conservation techniques and cutting-edge multimedia installations take center stage, ensuring that even the most delicate artifacts are not only protected but come alive with captivating stories.

The First National Museum leverages augmented reality to create interactive exhibits that bridge the gap between the past and the present. Imagine standing before the ruins of an ancient civilization and, with a flick of your wrist, watching as the structures rebuild themselves, revealing the splendor of their prime. Or witnessing history unfolding before your eyes through holographic projections that breathe life into historical figures, allowing them to recount their experiences first-hand. This perfect marriage of technology and history elevates the museum experience to new heights, captivating visitors of all ages and backgrounds.

Untold Stories from the Margins

While history is often dominated by the tales of the powerful and influential, The First National Museum is committed to shedding light on the untold stories from the margins. From the struggles of marginalized communities to the triumphs of unsung heroes, these narratives paint a more complete picture of our society and foster empathy, understanding, and inclusivity among visitors.

Step into a dedicated gallery that showcases the accomplishments of female trailblazers who shattered glass ceilings despite societal constraints. Be moved by the stories of ordinary citizens who rose above adversity during times of national crises. By presenting these narratives alongside more familiar stories, The First National Museum ensures that our history is not just a reflection of the prominent few, but a tapestry imbued with the voices of all who contributed to our nation's development.

Engaging the Future Generations

As custodians of our nation's history, The First National Museum recognizes the importance of engaging younger generations in the stories that shaped our present. Through specially curated programs and interactive exhibits, the museum inspires curiosity and a thirst for knowledge in young minds.

Imagine a workshop where children dress up as historical figures and reenact pivotal moments or a digital treasure hunt that challenges them to uncover hidden artifacts. These innovative programs not only make history accessible and exciting, but also foster a sense of pride and connection to our nation's heritage.

Dublin’s Natural History Museum is a uniquely preserved sliver of the past, an intact example of a nineteenth-century natural science collection. While its polished cases and stuffed animals show us what the museum looked like in its heyday, this book is the first detailed exploration of its early history, showing how and why it came into being, and what it meant in nineteenth-century Irish culture. From its earliest days as a small collection at the Royal Dublin Society to the gala inauguration of its new home on Merrion Square in 1857, everyone had an idea about what it was for, and how natural science would benefit Ireland. It was the first public museum in Ireland, a project of the RDS that was supported by central government as an educational venue, and was frequented by ordinary citizens and visitors as well as leading lights of natural science. Its history offers a view of science in Ireland showing that the museum was built over time by donations from citizens and scientific amateurs as well as professionals, and that Irish men of science shaped new knowledge from the raw material in the collections. Far from the aura of genteel nostalgia that continues to attract visitors today, the Natural History Museum of the nineteenth century was an active scientific institution with strong connections to the wider sphere of European science, and shows how participation in natural science was a form cultural activity for the people who engaged with the museum.
