Uncovering the Forgotten Hero

Elias Simojoki, born in 1899, grew up in a humble family deeply rooted in faith. His journey to becoming one of the most influential speakers of his time wasn't an easy one. As a young man, he witnessed the devastation and suffering caused by World War I. Inspired by his desire to bring about change, Simojoki dedicated his life to standing up for the oppressed and marginalized.

During the 1920s, Finland was undergoing rapid industrialization and urbanization. The working class faced challenging conditions, and socioeconomic inequality was rampant. It was within this context that Simojoki emerged as a beacon of hope, offering a voice for those who were unheard.

A Message of Hope and Empowerment

Simojoki's speeches were both passionate and intellectual, captivating audiences from all walks of life. He had a unique ability to address societal injustices while providing a message of hope and empowerment. His words resonated deeply, sparking a wave of social consciousness across Finland and beyond.

One of Simojoki's most iconic speeches was delivered in 1930, known as "The Burning Bush." The title itself, with its biblical references, evoked a sense of transcendence and divine inspiration. The speech touched upon themes of liberation and spiritual awakening, urging listeners to embrace their inner strength and fight against oppression.

A Call to Action

"The Burning Bush" speech urged individuals to break free from the chains of social inequality and march towards a brighter future. Simojoki emphasized the collective power of a united society and stressed the importance of solidarity in the face of adversity. The speech resonated deeply with his listeners, igniting a fire within their hearts and inspiring them to take action.

The Legacy Lives On

Elias Simojoki's impact extended far beyond his time on the podium. He played a key role in shaping the social and political landscape of Finland. His speeches paved the way for important reforms and brought attention to the struggles of the working class and marginalized communities.

Tragically, Simojoki's life was cut short as he became a victim of political turmoil. In 1939, during the early stages of World War II, he was arrested for his outspoken views and executed. His legacy, however, lives on through his words and the changes he helped ignite.

An Enduring Inspiration

The Burning Bush speeches by Elias Simojoki serve as a constant reminder of the power of words and the impact they can have on society. Simojoki's determination to fight for justice and equality continues to inspire generations of activists, reminding us of the importance of raising our own voices to create positive change.

As we reflect on the life and legacy of Elias Simojoki, let us be inspired to embrace our own burning bush moments – those instances where we find the strength and courage to speak out against injustice. Simojoki's story encourages us to ignite the flame within and pursue a world where everyone is heard and respected.

Lauri Elias Simojoki (1899-1940) was a Finnish soldier, parliamentarian, Lutheran priest, far right organizer, and leader of an attempted coup in Estonia. As a young man, he served in the Finnish War of Independence in 1918 and fought as a guerilla fighter in Karelia in 1919. Later, he studied theology at the University of Helsinki and was an essential part of the formation of the youth nationalist organization the Academic Karelia Society.

Ordained as a Lutheran minister in 1925, in 1933 he joined the Finnish parliament and took command of the Sinimustat, the youth wing of the Patriotic People’s Movement, inspired by and modeled on similar movements in Germany and Italy. Although the Sinimustat was disbanded a mere three years later due to its involvement in an attempted coup in Estonia, Simojoki remained a Member of Parliament and went on to found the Finnish Mustapaidat (Blackshirts) in 1937. He enlisted as a military chaplain at the outbreak of the Winter War and lost his life to Soviet gunfire while performing a mercy killing to a wounded horse on the battlefield.

The Burning Bush (Palava Pensas) is a selection of Simojoki’s patriotic and political speeches compiled by his comrade Vilho Helanen in 1942. It is in these speeches that Simojoki’s commitment to, and love for, Greater Finland stands out above all else. It is for Greater Finland that Simojoki worked all his life, the grand dream for which in the end he sacrificed his life. These speeches are now being made available for the first time in English by Antelope Hill Publishing.
