They showcase the fear and uncertainty felt by the soldiers, the longing for the familiar comforts of home, and the deep sense of camaraderie among comrades. These letters act as a bridge, connecting us with the individuals who went through extraordinary challenges during the war.

The Emotional Rollercoaster

The letters from the frontlines offer a rollercoaster of emotions. They range from heart-wrenching farewells to joyous descriptions of unexpected encounters. Each page transports us to a different moment in time, where hope and despair intertwined with every word. Reading these letters evokes empathy and allows us to explore the complexities of the human spirit amidst the horrors of war.

In August of 1914, when the First World War broke out, James W. Johnstone, privileged son of a prominent Nova Scotia family, immediately enlisted in the fledgling Canadian Expeditionary Force. Journeying from Valcartier, Quebec to the plains of southern England with the largest military force to ever cross the Atlantic, he was soon in Belgium, embroiled in some of the fiercest fighting of the war, on the Western front. Over 17 months, from the training camps and the trenches, through battles both momentous and routine, he wrote nearly 70 letters to his sweetheart, Isobel, at home in Halifax. These are his actual letters, and this is his story, in his own words.
