People have always valued quality. Simply, things that are made well last longer and fulfill their functions much better than things that aren’t made so well.
For many hundreds of years, quality was a matter of hiring the right craftsmen. Some had the knowledge and experience, and others didn’t. Some had the right tools to build fast and well, and others used whatever came to hand.
With the Industrial Revolution, the need for consistent quality became much more apparent. The explosion of goods and services required a more rigorous approach to matching form and function.
However, it wasn’t until the 1920s that a consistent, coordinated effort was made to identify techniques for controlling the quality of goods produced.
Since then, many concepts, techniques, approaches, and methodologies have appeared.
The concept of continuous improvement – the consistent and ongoing effort to improve processes, products, or services – is not new. Several premiere methodologies based on this concept are currently being used by nearly all organizations that seek to keep a competitive advantage over the competition.
Two such methodologies that have evolved to meet the quality challenge are Lean and Six Sigma. The methodologies come from separate evolutionary pathways, and they focus on different things.
When used together, Lean and Six Sigma complement each other. Actual experience has shown that companies using both Lean and Six Sigma methods can reduce lead times by up to 80%, reduce waste and quality costs by 20%, and improve on-time delivery to 99% or better.
As more organizations adopt the combined methodologies, known as Lean Six Sigma, a body of knowledge is built around how best to use their combined strengths to execute organizational strategies and to gain and keep competitive advantage.
