A Grand Tradition: Origins and Evolution of Rugby Football

The roots of Rugby Football can be traced back to the early 19th century in England, where several schools and universities started playing a game known as "football" with varying rules, often allowing players to handle the ball. The turning point came in 1823 when William Webb Ellis, a student at Rugby School, allegedly picked up the ball and ran with it during a football game, giving birth to a new form of the sport.

From that historic moment, the sport evolved rapidly, with teams and leagues forming across different countries. Rugby Football united players from various backgrounds, promoting camaraderie, teamwork, and mutual respect.

An historical novel about rugby football: In 1895, 22 clubs from the north of England broke away from the Rugby Union to form the Northern Union, which in 1922 became the Rugby Football League. From then on, rugby football was split into two codes, League and Union, and association football became the major winter sport.
But, supposing that instead of breaking away, the northern clubs had won a majority in 1895 and taken control of the sport.
This historical novel looks at how rugby football could have developed as a united game, with a progressive leadership, up to the start of the Second World War.
It is the memoirs of David Peterson, who was Secretary of the English Rugby Association from 1916 to 1940; but was involved in the sport from the 1880s.
This book will be of interest to rugby fans of both codes.
