Full Teardown Cleaning And Reassembly With Pictures | Firearm Maintenance And
Firearm maintenance is of utmost importance in ensuring the longevity and optimal performance of your weapon. One crucial aspect of this maintenance routine is full teardown cleaning and reassembly. In this comprehensive guide, we will take you through the step-by-step process of disassembling your firearm, thoroughly cleaning each component, and safely reassembling it with detailed pictures to assist you along the way.
Why is Full Teardown Cleaning Necessary?
Regular cleaning of your firearm is vital to prevent malfunctioning and potential safety hazards. However, sometimes a simple surface cleaning is not enough. Full teardown cleaning involves completely breaking down your firearm into its individual parts, allowing you to reach all areas that tend to accumulate dirt and debris.
This meticulous cleaning process ensures that any carbon buildup, dirt, or fouling that may have accumulated in hard-to-reach areas such as the bolt carrier group, trigger assembly, or barrel is thoroughly removed. By performing a full teardown cleaning, you can eliminate any obstructions that might interrupt the proper functioning of your firearm, ultimately facilitating smooth and reliable performance.

Preparing for Full Teardown Cleaning
Prior to disassembling your firearm, make sure you have a clean and well-lit workspace. It is crucial to organize the disassembled parts in a way that allows for easy identification and reassembly later on. Prepare a cleaning kit that includes a suitable cleaning solvent, lubricant, cleaning brushes of various sizes, patches, and a cleaning rod.
Step 1: Unloading and Safety First
Before you proceed with any disassembly, ensure that your firearm is unloaded and in a safe condition. Remove the magazine and ensure the chamber is clear. Follow all safety guidelines and procedures provided by the manufacturer of your specific firearm.
Step 2: Field Strip
Field stripping refers to the initial disassembly of your firearm, separating the major components such as the slide, barrel, frame, and magazine. Consult your firearm's manual for specific instructions on field stripping as each firearm model may have differing procedures.
Select a well-ventilated area and safely remove the slide assembly, barrel, recoil spring, and spring guide rod. Pay attention to small parts such as pins, springs, and extractors that may need to be removed as well.
Step 3: Cleaning the Barrel and Slide
Use an appropriate cleaning solvent and a cleaning brush to thoroughly clean the barrel and slide. Pay close attention to the chamber, barrel lands, and grooves. Use patches and a cleaning rod to ensure the removal of any residue or debris.
Inspect the slide for any buildup of dirt or grit. Clean the firing pin channel, breech face, and extractor thoroughly. In areas harder to reach, use a small brush or a cotton swab soaked in cleaning solvent.
Step 4: Trigger Assembly and Small Components
Remove the disassembled trigger assembly from the frame. Clean each component carefully, paying attention to any grit, carbon buildup, or debris. The trigger, sear, pins, and springs should all be cleaned using an appropriate solvent and brushes. Inspect them for any signs of wear or damage and replace if necessary.
Ensure the magazine well, feed ramps, and other smaller components are thoroughly cleaned as well. A toothbrush or small cleaning brushes can be helpful for these areas.
Step 5: Frame Cleaning
With all major components disassembled and cleaned, focus on cleaning the firearm frame. Use cleaning brushes, cotton swabs, and patches soaked in cleaning solvent to remove any dirt, residue, or buildup in the frame's recesses and crevices. Pay special attention to the rails, feed ramp, and other contact points.
Step 6: Lubrication and Reassembly
Once all components are thoroughly cleaned and dried, it is time to lubricate the necessary parts before reassembling the firearm. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines or use a suitable firearm lubricant to ensure smooth operation and protection against corrosion.
Take your time to carefully reassemble the firearm, referring to the detailed pictures and following the reverse order of disassembly. Pay attention to proper alignment and functionality at each step. Consult the manual if needed.
A full teardown cleaning and reassembly of your firearm is an essential part of routine maintenance to ensure reliable and optimal performance. By following these step-by-step instructions and utilizing the detailed pictures provided, you can confidently undertake this deep cleaning process. Remember to always prioritize safety by following the manufacturer's guidelines and taking necessary precautions during the entire procedure.
Take pride in maintaining your firearm in its best possible condition, as it will reward you with consistent accuracy and reliability. Regular full teardown cleaning, combined with periodic surface cleanings, will help extend the lifespan of your firearm and enhance your shooting experience.

If you own a Makarov pistol or one of the exact clone variants, or are thinking about getting one, this manual will is jam packed with valuable full color pictures and very detailed instructions on weapon maintenance and cleaning, it will certainly give you a lot of knowledge that is unavailable elsewhere.
The intent of this fine work of literature is to give you, the reader, a technical but not overly over-detailed working overview of how to field strip, fully disassemble, thoroughly clean and preserve, and reassemble the Makarov pistol for decades of shooting and adventure. Mostly, only commonly and locally available tools and supplies are used in this instruction, except for the Makarov cleaning tool, which came with nearly all new Makarov pistols and is equally ubiquitous as the Makarov pistol itself. Several official and scanned manuals for the Makarov type pistols are available for download online with a search, none of them are detailed or illustrative enough for me.
You could read through this manual and perform a full disassembly/cleaning/reassembly in 1-2 hours, and if you get lost just follow the directions to get back on track
