Letter writing is an art form that has been cherished throughout history. It allows one to express their deepest thoughts, emotions, and desires in a way that no other medium can truly capture. When you receive a letter, it's like someone has taken the time to craft their words just for you, sealing them with their heart's affection. “Negro Soldiers!” is a 1950s propaganda pamphlet that was distributed by North Korea during the Korean War. The target audience of the pamphlet were African-Americans serving in in the U.S. army. The pamphlet argues that African-Americans should not be fighting against Koreans in Korea when they were still facing so much racial discrimination and injustice at home. During the 1950s, black Americans faced a great deal of racial discrimination, including murders by the Klu Klux Klan. Meanwhile the black civil rights movement was beginning to grow.

The Korean War was an outgrowth of the Cold War rivalry between the United States, and its allies, and the Soviet-led Communist Bloc. The fathers of modern communism, Karl Marx and Engels, had predicted that modern industrial capitalism would inevitably lead to communist revolution, and that communist revolutions would create utopian societies.

The First World War, which devastated Europe, led to the collapse of pre-war regimes, and, in some cases, the rise of revolutionary communists and other radicals. In Russia the Tsarist regime collapsed, and the hard-line communist Bolsheviks eventually took power, defeating their socialist and right-wing opponents. Other communist revolutionaries, in places like Germany, Hungary, France, Italy, Great Britain, and the United States, were less successful, and were outmanoeuvred by right-wing, fascist, opponents or suppressed by the establishment.

As the only major Communist nation in the world, Soviet Russia remained isolated and distrusted by most of the world in the 1920s and 1930s. But when Germany’s Nazi leader Adolf Hitler invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, the western Allies formed an alliance with the Communists. The combined western Allied and Soviet forces had defeated the Axis Germany and Japan by 1945.

As the Second World War ended, however, rivalries between the Soviets and the West re-emerged. Western nations feared that the Soviets were trying to expand communism into new territories. In former Axis territories occupied by Soviet troops, Soviet leader Josef Stalin engineered the rise of local pro-Soviet Communist regimes. The Americans and their allies responded by forming defensive anti-Communist alliances and sending military aid to anti-communist forces, such as those in the Greek and Chinese civil wars of the 1940s.

In formerly Japanese-ruled Korea, the Americans and Soviets agreed to divide the peninsula into separate zones of occupation at the end of World War II. The Americans occupied the south, while the Americans occupied the north. Both nations set up cooperative regimes in their zones of occupation. As a result, North Korea ended up with a pro-Soviet Communist government, and the South with a pro-western government. Korea was supposed to be reunited after the war, but the 2 Korean governments were at odds with each other, and the reunion never took place.

In 1950 North Korea invaded the South to reunite the peninsula by force. With Soviet military aid, the North Koreans quickly overran most of South Korea, including Seoul. South Korean forces were pushed back to the port of Pusan. But American and UN military intervention expelled the North Koreans from the South, and then the Americans occupied most of North Korea. At that point, the Chinese intervened, pushing the Americans back into South Korea. The war ended in a stalemate, with the pre-war border largely unchanged.
