The book chronicles Sean McGrath's trip to a monastery where he encounters a mysterious monk who encourages him to explore the Buddhist teachings, fortune tellers and animist spirits called nats that pervade the spiritual current of the country.
The personal narrative is an immersion into the small expat community of Rangoon in the late 1980s. With high school friends, he lingers at local bars and restaurants, noodle shacks and teahouses and takes in the cultural attractions of the city, giving detailed observations of the dilapidated Raj-era buildings and gilded pagodas.
He makes a trip upcountry, gazes over the temple-strewn plains of Pagan, heads out for Inle lake, a timeless place of stilt Myanmar (Burma) A Travelogue also tells of the friendship with a Burmese university student involved in the protests against the military government in the uprising of 1988. With unflinching detail, McGrath describes the harrowing events of August 8, 1988, when the regime crushed the student movement that fomented nationwide demonstrations. The resulting takeover by the totalitarian SLORC (State Law and Order Restoration Council) secured absolute power and suppressed the revolution by killing thousands of dissidents and imposing martial law .
