The book chronicles Sean McGrath's trip to a monastery where he encounters a mysterious monk who encourages him to explore the Buddhist teachings, fortune tellers and animist spirits called nats that pervade the spiritual current of the country.

The personal narrative is an immersion into the small expat community of Rangoon in the late 1980s. The resulting takeover by the totalitarian SLORC (State Law and Order Restoration Council) secured absolute power and suppressed the revolution by killing thousands of dissidents and imposing martial law .
