The Arrival: Stepping into a Timeless World

As our plane touches down in Yangon, the largest city in Myanmar, we are immediately captivated by the air of timelessness that surrounds us. The city's colonial architecture, bustling markets, and vibrant street life provide a glimpse into an era long gone by. Walking through the streets, the aromas of local cuisine fill the air, tempting us to taste the authentic flavors of Myanmar.

Our first stop is the awe-inspiring Shwedagon Pagoda, a sacred Buddhist site that dates back over 2,500 years. As we approach the gilded stupa, its golden glow seems to transcend time, enveloping us in a spiritual aura. Marveling at the intricate details of its architecture, we can't help but feel a sense of peace and tranquility wash over us. The view from the pagoda offers a sweeping panorama of Yangon, allowing us to witness the fusion of old and new that defines this city.

Leaving Yangon behind, we embark on a journey to Bagan, an ancient city that is home to over 2,000 temples and pagodas. As we explore this UNESCO World Heritage site, we find ourselves engulfed in a sea of red brick structures that stand as a testament to Myanmar's rich and storied history.

Waking up before sunrise, we climb one of the temples to witness the magical moment when the first rays of light caress the plains of Bagan. The landscape is transformed into a mystical wonderland, with the silhouettes of pagodas stretching as far as the eye can see. The personal narrative is an immersion into the small expat community of Rangoon in the late 1980s. With high school friends, he lingers at local bars and restaurants, noodle shacks and teahouses and takes in the cultural attractions of the city, giving detailed observations of the dilapidated Raj-era buildings and gilded pagodas.

He makes a trip upcountry, gazes over the temple-strewn plains of Pagan, heads out for Inle lake, a timeless place of stilt Myanmar (Burma) A Travelogue also tells of the friendship with a Burmese university student involved in the protests against the military government in the uprising of 1988. With unflinching detail, McGrath describes the harrowing events of August 8, 1988, when the regime crushed the student movement that fomented nationwide demonstrations. The resulting takeover by the totalitarian SLORC (State Law and Order Restoration Council) secured absolute power and suppressed the revolution by killing thousands of dissidents and imposing martial law .
