Helen Crowley Cheek was born in Spokane Washington in 1933. Her childhood was greatly impacted by WWII. This book speaks to her experience during the war.
When one of my sons was a freshman in high school, he surprised me with the question, “What were the three greatest influences on your life as a kid?”
“What makes you ask?” I said.
“It’s homework.”
“A strange assignment,” I thought, but the vagaries of modern education were often mysterious to my generation.
The answers to his questions were easy. With little thought I said, “My family, the Catholic Church, and the War.”
“What war?” he asked. “Viet Nam?”
“World War II.” I said, “I was in grade school at the time. It had a huge impact on our lives.”
“Oh, really?” he said with a quizzical look on his face. “I’ll bet I’m the only one who brings in that answer.”
Telling my children tales of the “olden days” was no longer a priority of mine. On a visit to the town of my birth, I drove them past the grand classic brick building, now a retirement home that had once housed Holy Names Academy where I went to high school. I admit it was not exactly the Statue of Liberty, but I hoped they would exhibit a modicum of interest in their mother’s childhood. I fanaticized that in my failing years, they will gather round my rocking chair and pepper me with questions about my youth, before it is too late.
