Fans display unwavering loyalty towards their local team, believing in the players who represent their county with pride. The history of each county team is a reflection of its people, traditions, and heritage. This is why county cricket matters!

The Rivalries that Ignite Passion

One of the most exciting aspects of county cricket is the fierce rivalries that have stood the test of time. The atmosphere at these games is electric, with the stands filled with passionate supporters, fueling the players' fire on the field.

One such rivalry that captivates cricket enthusiasts is the battle of historic county towns, Kent and Sussex. With a rivalry dating back to the 18th century, matches between these two teams are fiercely contested, generating incredible excitement among fans. The atmosphere at Canterbury or Hove when these two teams face each other is nothing short of extraordinary.

Raising the Bar with Healthy Competition

Competition is the lifeblood of sporting success, and county cricket is no exception. The 18 county teams strive to outperform each other, raising the bar year after year. The competition between counties pushes players to constantly improve their skills and perform at their best. This healthy competition not only benefits individual players but also contributes to the overall growth of English cricket.

Often, players who consistently shine at the county level get selected to represent England at the international stage. County cricket provides a crucial breeding ground for young talents, allowing them to showcase their skills against more experienced players and catch the attention of national selectors. The successes of players like Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Stuart Broad at the international level can be traced back to their early days in county cricket.

Promoting Youth Development

County cricket plays a vital role in nurturing young talent throughout the country. The county academy systems provide opportunities for children and teenagers to develop their skills, receive professional coaching, and progress through the ranks. Talented youngsters compete with experienced professionals, creating a challenging yet supportive environment for growth.

One of the leading examples of county youth development is the Somerset Cricket Board's emphasis on nurturing homegrown talents. With a strong academy system and close ties to local clubs, Somerset has produced several outstanding players who have gone on to make significant contributions to the England team.

Making a Difference in Local Communities

County cricket has a far-reaching impact beyond just the sport. Each county team actively engages with its local community, often running outreach programs, cricket camps, and coaching sessions for children. Additionally, county grounds also host events, concerts, and family days, attracting a diverse range of people and promoting a sense of community unity.

With such a vast pool of talent on display, the County Championship has been the cradle for many cricketing greats over the years. The likes of Jack Hobbs, Sir Ian Botham, and Andrew Flintoff have graced the county stage, leaving a lasting legacy and inspiring future generations of cricketers.

The County Championship is a testament to the remarkable unity displayed by all 18 counties. Despite the rivalries, the counties come together with one voice to promote the sport, uplift cricketing standards, and ensure the longevity of a vital aspect of English culture.

County Cricket: Preserving Tradition, Inspiring Future

As we celebrate the enduring legacy of county cricket, it is important to recognize the sport's role in preserving tradition and inspiring the cricketers of tomorrow. The 18 counties stand as beacons of local pride, united by a shared love for the game and a commitment to its evolution.

This new magazine is a pure celebration of County Cricket and a chance for you to delight in it. The aim of County Cricket Matters is to be a voice for those concerned at how top-class cricket is changing in this country. The purpose is not to denigrate those running the game or question the motives behind attempts to broaden the appeal of a sport which has often been its own worst enemy. It is also not to look back to some ‘golden age’, which almost certainly never existed. Cricket must evolve, but it must do so in ways true to the spirit and traditions of the game. A key part of this is continuing to base our national game around the county structure, as it has been for more than 150 years.

Our aims are therefore to: 1) Highlight what is happening to English cricket and what we believe are the likely consequences for the county game. 2) Push for greater accountability for decision making by ECB, given its role as guardian of the game. 3) Provide a focus for supporters of the county game to question what is happening. 4) And finally, and most importantly, we want to champion what is great about County Cricket.

We are not uncritical in our enthusiasm for County Cricket, but, as we spelt out in our first edition, we want to see the championship promoted, celebrated, and played throughout the year, and we want consideration given to ways of growing the game which do not destroy what we already have. Most of all, we want recognition that County Cricket matters.
