My Family Love Affair With Thirty Eight Dalmatians
Dalmatians are known for their distinct black spots on a white coat, making them one of the most recognizable dog breeds in the world. But for my family, they hold a special place in our hearts. We have had the privilege of owning, caring for, and loving thirty-eight Dalmatians throughout the years. This has been an extraordinary journey filled with joy, challenges, and a deep appreciation for these remarkable dogs.
The Beginning of Our Love Affair
It all started when I was a child. My parents surprised me with our first Dalmatian, Spot, on my seventh birthday. I instantly fell in love with his charming personality, playful nature, and of course, those iconic spots. Spot became my best friend and loyal companion, accompanying me on countless adventures.
As Spot grew older, my parents decided to bring another Dalmatian into our family. This marked the beginning of a tradition that would continue for years to come. We named her Bella, and she became Spot's partner in crime, offering us double the joy and happiness.

The Expansion of Our Dalmatian Family
Over time, word got around about our love for Dalmatians, and people began reaching out to us whenever they needed to find a new home for their Dalmatian puppies. This led to countless opportunities to save and adopt more Dalmatians in need. Our family couldn't resist the opportunity to provide a loving home for these beautiful dogs, so we gladly opened our doors to them.
Year after year, our Dalmatian family grew, and so did our love for each and every one of them. We took pride in ensuring they received the best care, love, and attention they deserved. Our commitment to their well-being became a cornerstone of our family values.
Dalmatians as Part of Our Daily Lives
Living with thirty-eight Dalmatians is certainly no small feat. It requires a tremendous amount of patience, time, and dedication. However, the rewards are immeasurable. Our home is constantly filled with laughter, wagging tails, and an incredible sense of companionship.
Each day, we wake up to a flurry of furry kisses and playful antics. Our Dalmatians bring a unique energy into our lives, reminding us of the beauty of unconditional love and loyalty. They have taught us the value of responsibility, empathy, and the importance of providing a nurturing environment for animals.
Challenges Along the Way
It's important to acknowledge that owning thirty-eight Dalmatians comes with its fair share of challenges. From the financial aspect of providing for their medical care and basic needs to managing their exercise and training requirements, it can be overwhelming at times.
We have faced difficulties in finding appropriate living spaces, as not every place is equipped to accommodate a large number of dogs. It often takes extensive research and planning to ensure their comfort and safety.
Additionally, each Dalmatian has a unique personality and set of needs. It demands a great deal of attention and patience to understand and address their individual requirements. However, the bond we have formed with each one of them makes every challenge worthwhile.
The Impact on Our Lives
Our love affair with thirty-eight Dalmatians has not only enriched our lives but has also taught us the power of compassion and selflessness. These dogs have brought us immeasurable joy, offered us comfort during difficult times, and served as constant reminders of what truly matters in life.
They have become part of our identity as a family, representing our love, unity, and shared values. Our journey with them has united us, providing a sense of purpose beyond what we could have imagined.
A Legacy to Cherish
As the years go by, and our Dalmatians grow old, we recognize the importance of cherishing the time we have with them. They have given us a lifetime of unforgettable memories and unwavering love, and we are forever grateful.
We hope that our love affair with thirty-eight Dalmatians inspires others to consider adopting and providing a loving home for animals in need. It is a journey filled with countless rewards, and we wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.
Celebrating Our Dalmatian Family
To commemorate our incredible journey, we organized an annual Dalmatian-themed party, inviting fellow dog enthusiasts and anyone wanting to learn more about Dalmatians. It serves as an opportunity to share our experiences, raise awareness about responsible pet ownership, and contribute to local animal shelters and rescues.
Our love affair with thirty-eight Dalmatians has truly shaped who we are as individuals and as a family. It has taught us invaluable lessons, brought us immense happiness, and left an indelible mark on our hearts. We will forever be grateful for the joy they have brought into our lives.

The Sexton family's long love affair with the Dalmatian began in Linda's childhood. There, on a snowy morning in the family home just outside Boston, LInda heard a whimpering coming from the basement. She discovered their first family dog giving birth to a litter. Witnessing the intimate act of birth had a profound effect on the family. Her mother, Anne, used the experience to complete the poem "Live," part of her third collection, titled Live or Die , which would be awarded a Pulitzer Prize. For Linda, the boundless joy of both breed and breeding triggered in her a lifelong love of Dalmatians. All told, thirty–eight Dalmatians will move through her life: the ones that cheer and support her through difficulty, divorce, and depression; the ones that stay with her as she enters the world of professional breeding and showing of Dals; and, of course, the one true dog of her heart, Gulliver, her most stalwart of canine champions.
Bespotted is a page–turning and compelling look at the unique place dogs occupy in our lives. It captures another piece of this literary family's history, taps into the curious and fascinating world of dog showing/dog fancy. Bespotted is an upbeat and commercial memoir by one of the most critically acclaimed memoirists of our time.
